Culture is one of the main targets of far-right forces. In recent years, the ideological campaign against the arts has become increasingly overt, with friend-foe distinctions being reintroduced: the local family theatre is denied further funding because it attended a demonstration against right-wing extremism. Contemporary analogies are removed from the script of a youth theatre group dealing with the Nazi era. The queer-feminist collective is threatened with violence on social media. All this and much more has happened in recent months. In ‘BLICKWECHSEL’ (Change of Perspective), director Janina Möbius examines this development in dialogue with Rimini Protokoll, CHICKS*, Katharina Warda, Julia Wissert and many other personalities from the worlds of art, culture and science.
Insights into performances and plays from across the spectrum of the performing arts show not only how they counteract increasing polarisation. When the citizens' jury in the Harz region discusses and selects the queer-feminist play, when the chronology of racist attacks in 2020 is traced as a performative indictment in Hanau Town Hall, and when children talk about stereotypes and class differences in front of the theatre doors in East Berlin, it becomes very clear how the performing arts invite us to reflect and think ahead together on a daily basis. And in doing so, they strengthen democracy in the long term.
