When protests move into public spaces and take root there, blockading, defending, or seizing these spaces, they produce protest architecture. The conceptual documentary Protest/Architecture, which consists entirely of archive material, captures the essence of twelve powerful protest movements between 1968 and 2023 in five chapters. The dynamic montage emphasizes the structural bonds and similarities between the protests in occupying public spaces, living in self-created temporary structures, and resisting their eviction and destruction by the police or the army. Much of the archive material comes from activists and filmmakers who have shown solidarity with the respective protest movements, which gives the film a unique perspective on the events. The choice of images, the montage, and the soundtrack emphasize the power of mass protests against oppression and social injustice.
